Video Transcript for All You Need to Know About the Stabil-Step Stabilizer Jack for Step Assembly

Zack: Hey, everybody. Zack here at etrailer.com. If you've been in any sort of camping situation with a camper, an RV, I'm sure you're familiar with the old steps that shift back and forth. You feel them dip down as they go in. This one is not too bad, but the owner wanted to get something to make it a little bit more stable. You can see I'm bouncing around a little bit there. Now, part of that is not having the stabilizers down, but Stromberg Carlson has this little piece right here that's going to act as a stabilizer.

It's a really quick and easy way to add a little bit of stability to the bottom of our steps. We can just slide this under and it's probably going to be tough to see, but all you do is you rotate that top and you can see how it screws up or screws down to get a nice stable platform underneath here.So we'll slide that underneath there, get that put in place. This step is automatic, so we're not going to be able to lift it up like some of the manual ones, but this is still going to be effective on both styles. You can see, we just rotate that until it makes contact with our step. And we're going to take a good amount of that play out of there.

So somewhat challenging with this particular set up here today, but if you had a manual folding step, this would be really easy because you could just lift that bottom step up and then put it in place. We'll just get that where it's making contact, and then we get an extra rotation there. We're going to take a lot of that play out of those steps. And with that in place, you can see I was moving the camper quite a bit before. I weigh a couple of 100 pounds. There's a little bit back and forth there on the sides, just because that's centered.

If you're worried about that, you could just pick up a second one, put one on each corner. I know that's what a lot of people do, but getting in and out of the camper, you can see it's much more stable. Everybody is familiar with that old set that we've been on, where it just immediately drops down. This is going to do a good job of cutting that down. Now, this works great for steps that sit a little bit closer to the ground, like on our RV here today. These are only at about six and a half inches off the ground, but if you have something that sits taller, Stromberg Carlson has a couple of other options.

This is the same design, it's just a little bit taller. So this works from about seven and three quarters up to about 14 inches, so that gives us much more range. And then they also offer a more permanent option. So this mounts to the bottom of our steps, and then you pull this pin and clip out, and it deploys down. However, you have it mounted on there. It gives us the same idea of putting a footplate down there and you can expand this. So this works from eight and a half inches up to 15 and a half inches. So these wouldn't work here today, but we've had these on some steps that sit a little higher off the ground, and they have the same type of stability that they had as this one down here. You can see this is going to be a nice steel construction as a black paint finish on it. I've scratched it up already, just using it here in the parking lot for a few minutes. If you use it on anything hard, like a parking lot or a gravel lot, you're going to scratch up the paint, but the material makeup of it is really strong. It has a nice four inch by four inch plate on each end, so that's where all that weight gets transferred out. So if you put this in soft ground, it's going to do a good job of spreading that out so we're not sinking down in if it was just a pole, just that center shaft there. But when we bring this out, you can see how this works. So you can see there's that threaded screw there. So taking this all the way up, it will come undone. So you want to make sure at its peak that you're at least threaded in a couple threads so it holds in place. That way it doesn't fall out. But it has pretty good distance there. So I'm going to take this all the way out as you can see there, and then I will bring it back in a couple turns. And we'll get this measured out right there. That's going to measure at just shy of seven and three quarters. And then you can also see the hole in each plate. Those aren't intended for permanently mounting. There's not a folding set of steps that I'm aware of, that you can attach this to and not interfere with folding these up. But what that allows you to do is if you're going to maybe be doing some more permanent camping, you could maybe drill a hole through your step, drop a bolt down through that to keep it from shifting if you are worried about that.I've also seen people attach this to a piece of wood that they have down on the ground, just to spread out some more energy. It all depends on however you want to use it when it comes to that. But here in the parking lot, we found that it worked out just fine, just leaving it alone. And then when I bring it down to its most compact version, we're at four and three quarters of an inch. So we've got a little bit of travel there. I think it works out best for these sets of steps that sit pretty low to the ground. It has a total weight capacity of 750 pounds, so that's a pretty significant amount of weight. It probably exceeds some sets of steps, so you definitely want to go with whichever of the two is the lowest. So if your steps only have a weight capacity of 500 pounds, you would want to follow that instead.Overall, I think this is a really nice, cost effective, simple way to add some stability to your steps. So if you're looking to just extend the life of a set of steps that's already fine, or you don't want make that investment or leap into a higher end option like the GlowStep Revolution, this is going to be a really good way to go. But that's going to do it for a look at the Stable Step Stabilizer from Stromberg Carlson.
